GCC Board Member helps New Mexico Chiropractors fight for Principled Chiropractic

GCC Board Member, Dr. Lou Hilliard (Mableton, GA), traveled to New Mexico in March to help DCs there in the fight against HB127, legislation trying to change the definition of chiropractic in that state by giving certain chiropractors ability to prescribe legend drugs.  Shown above with the Governor of New Mexico, Cindy Martinez,  and one of his fraternity brothers, Dr. Damnian Cato, a chiropractor in New Mexico; Dr. Hilliard was one of several chiropractors from around the country who traveled to New Mexico to show their opposition for HB127 and their support for the principles of chiropractic.

Issue:
Council on Chiropractic Proposed Standards Change

The GCC believed that the CCE's recently proposed changes to the educational standards represented the gravest threat to chiropractic in recent history. The GCC took imediate action and urged all DCs to participate in this crisis. Immediately below are the GCC's responses and several options on how doctors of chiropractic should have responded. Below this is a more detailed explanation of the issue that will help you navigate through this crisis.

Select from the list below to see GCC responses.  The GCC took a leadership role in helping DCs understand and participate in a timely manner.. We would like to thank Dr. Steve Welsh for all the work he has put in on preparing these responses.

The GCC takes URGENT ACTION !

The Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) is considering dramatically revised new standards for chiropractic institutions that fundamentally alter the focus of chiropractic education by the proposed removal of virtually every chiropractic-specific definition and requirement .  While there are many issues that should concern every principled chiropractor, there are four key changes we strongly believe must be reversed.  These are:

  1. A proposal to expand the degree programs accredited by the CCE beyond the D.C. degree to “equivalent” degree offerings.

  2. The elimination of any and all references to the concept of subluxation, vertebral subluxation, or vertebral subluxation complex.

  3. The elimination of the section addressing the “Purpose of Chiropractic Education” which includes the references to the profession being oriented toward health care “without the use of drugs and surgery.”

  4. The modification of the term and definition of “Chiropractic primary care physician.”

If the proposed standards, which are scheduled to take effect in 2012, are adopted we would be nothing more than a glorified manual therapist. Nowhere do the proposed Standards define chiropractic . They could be for nursing, dental, physical therapy or even medical education.  This would represent a major step backward for the chiropractic profession and open the door for a dramatic re-direction of chiropractic in a medical direction.

CCE was accepting comments from the field and you had an opportunity to make your voice heard on these critical changes.  CCE has provided a format through which to submit comments via fax.  Click here to print out a faxable comment form. The time for comments has expired as of September 24, 2010, however, the GCC will continue to monitor the situation and will keep you informed.

The deadline for receiving comments has closed on September 24th.

The ICA developed model comments you may review for ideas and concepts on which to build your personal comments.  Please click here to view these model comments.  Many doctors used the faxable comment form to submit their feedback to CCE.

Life West has provided an excellent comparison of the proposed and current educational standards of the Council On Chiropractic Education.  Dr. Clum sums up his following concerns by noting that the items in the CCE Standards revision indicate an attempt to move the profession as follows:

a. Toward the Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine perspective
b. Away from the use of the term subluxation
c. Toward the inclusion of drug therapy
d. Away from being a drugless discipline
e. Toward a generalized common definition of primary care as used in primary medicine.
f. Away from any definition of chiropractic and what a chiropractor does.

Here are some tips to filling in the CCE comment form:

Field 1) Please indicate you are a FIELD PRACTITIONER (DC)
Field 2) You can LEAVE BLANK
Field 3) Add your own general comments (see points a-f from Dr. Clum above)...be specific and clear
Field 4) You can LEAVE BLANK
Field 5) Add your personal information

The deadline for submitting your comments has past as of September 24, 2010 so NOW WE WATCH!
